Forlan, Murer win Latin American sports awards

December 18, 2010 –Uruguayan soccer player Diego Forlan, Brazilian pole vaulter Fabiana Murer and the Brazilian men’s volleyball team won major Latin American sports awards of the year, the Cuban Agency Prensa Latina (PL) reported on Friday.

Forlan, who won the Golden Ball Award in the World Cup in South Africa after leading Uruguay to the semifinals, garnered 50 votes to secure the Sportsman of the Year title, beating Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi (37) and Cuban wrestler Mijain Lopez (10) into second and third places respectively.

The Sportswoman of the Year award went to pole vaulter Murer, who won the gold medal at the world indoor championships in Doha, Qatar.

Murer won 38 votes, followed by Cuban triple jumper Yargelis Savigne (23), who won last year’s award, and Argentine hockey player Luciana Aymar (13).

In the team’s category, the Brazilian men’s volleyball team, who won the World League and World Championship, collected 55 votes for the award, ahead of Argentine women’s field hockey team (29) and the Brazilian soccer team Inter de Port Alegre (16).
