Malaga 0-3 Atletico Madrid: Simao Bids Farewell To Los Colchoneros With A Majestic Performance

Los Colchoneros picked up the three points against Malaga in a tightly contested affair at Estadio La Rosaledo tonight. Tiago scored the opener midway through the second half, Alvaro Dominguez added a second after the break and Tiago completed his brace with twenty minutes to play to help Atleti ascend to sixth in the standings.

Neither team dominated in the early minutes of the game and chances were few and far between in front of both goals. The visitors, however, began to pick up steam as the game progressed and soon took the lead through Tiago in the 22nd minute.

The Portuguese midfielder headed past Ruben, following a cross by Simao from a free-kick on the left. Duda almost clawed one back ten minutes later with a free-kick which everybody, but David De Gea missed.

The game continued to be played at a slow tempo and the clear-cut chances were pretty much missing and the visitors entered the half-time break with a one-goal lead.

The restart saw little change in the way the game was played despite Malaga lining up in a more offensive formation. Still, the hosts were struggling to create upfront and were looking very susceptible on set-pieces.

In the 66th minute Los Colchoneros doubled their lead through Dominguez who headed past Ruben after the ball was flicked on by Tiago, following a free-kick by Simao. Three minutes later Malaga conceded once again from a set-piece and it was Simao again with a free-kick which found the unmarked Tiago in the box, who easily scored from close range.

Substitute Quincy Owusu-Abeyie wasted the hosts' best chance of the game when he blasted a free shot from the right side of the box into the netting, following a howler from Filipe Kasmirski. This proved to be the final moment of interest and the match finished 3-0.

Following tonight's result Atletico Madrid are sixth in the standings, while Malaga are third from bottom. Los Colchoneros' next league game is at home against Racing on the 2nd January, while Manuel Pellegrini's men visit Sporting de Gijon on the same day.
